Laudato Si
"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. .."

Pope Francis' encyclical, Laudato Si', is a profound invitation to everyone on the planet to care for our common home. We have been working extremely hard this last year to make sure we are doing everything within our power to care for our common home...
'Laudato Si Week' - We acknowledged this important week in school in a number of ways. We had MP Sara Britcliffe come into school to watch our presentation and answer questions (please see tab under the Eco Classroom folder) and we also had members of the 'Global Catholic Climate Movement' and local environmental committees come into school to speak with and do work with the children in their classes.
R.E. permeates through every part of our curriculum at every opportunity we get. During English, Class 3 have been using their speaking & listening, debating and persuasive skills to put together a video on the problem of waste plastics in our oceans. This links in perfectly with Pope Francis' call for us to care for our common home...'Laudato Si'.
Great News - In July 2020. we were informed that we had received the 'Laudato Si' award!!! Well done to all of our parents and children, and the whole community of Clayton-le-Moors for helping us to achieve this!
We are going for the 'Laudato Si' award this term and feel we have lots of evidence already compiled for how we can 'care for our common home'.
We have been caring for our common home through our eco-brick campaign. We have collected well over two tonnes of waste plastic (6,000 bottles) via this campaign, and used them to build our school an outdoor classroom and planters. There are lots more plans for the future too! It was wonderful to have Bishop John Arnold officially open the eco-classroom and weeks later, BBC News North West did a feature on us that appeared on TV three times over the course of the day.
Their report on Facebook was accessed by over a million people and we appeared in newspapers and websites far and wide in countries such as China and Australia. Throughout this process, which has really developed close links with the community as they have been fully involved, we have always been mindful of the real reasons we are doing it and further ways we can continue to care for our common home.
