Phonics
‘Phonics helps us to hear, identify and use different sounds we can then apply to our reading and writing.’
Phonics is a major focus in school. For the past four years, we have been in line with or above national and local averages. This is down to the hard work of phonics lead Mrs Hinett, and all of our staff, in providing exciting and challenging tasks which the children really enjoy. We are closely supported in our work by the Lancashire Literacy team who provide training and advice for us throughout the year.
At St. Mary's we use Red Rose Letters and Sounds which is closely linked to their Letters and Sounds program. This is the only scheme that is used in school. With this package comes regular training and support from the Lancashire English team.
The reading schemes we use in Key Stage 1 are: Pearson Bug Club, Dandelion Launchers and Big Cat Collins.

Each day we have a phonics star of the day for super phonics work!
With the emphasis we put on outdoor learning at every opportunity in our curriculum, we try to take meaningful phonics learning into the outdoors as often as we can.
